Goat Walks & Goatels

Each day, our goat family reminds us to slow down.

What began as a practical way to move our herd has become one of the richest parts of our life together. We wander through the paddocks and forest edges, learning the preferences of each goat, noticing which plants they seek out and which they leave behind. We observe the changing seasons through what is flowering, what is seeding and what medicine is available on the land.

The young walk beside us, pockets full of treasures and questions. We nibble on the sweet ends of native grasses, taste wild herbs and listen to stories shared between generations. We learn patience, presence and responsibility through the simple rhythms of caring for another being.

Alongside these daily adventures, Samuel and I have been creating new Goatels — beautiful sleeping quarters designed with both the goats and the land in mind. These elevated shelters provide dry, comfortable spaces for our goat family to rest, while also allowing us to easily collect the nutrient-rich manure from beneath them to nourish the gardens and food systems that sustain our community.

For us, animal husbandry is not simply about management or production. It is relationship. It is learning to read the subtle language of body posture, appetite, energy and behaviour. It is early mornings and muddy boots. It is celebrating new life and grieving loss. It is recognising that every animal has their own personality, preferences and medicine to offer.

Coco, Chai, Eden & Moloko

Our goats nourish us in more ways than one. They provide milk, companionship, opportunities for learning and countless invitations to step out of the rush of modern life and into a more reciprocal way of being.

These walks have become a classroom without walls.

They teach us that life is not always about efficiency. Sometimes the deepest learning happens slowly — one hoofstep at a time, in the sunshine, surrounded by the gentle presence of those we are privileged to care for.

The Goatels and the goat walks are part of a much bigger dreaming: creating systems that are beautiful, functional and regenerative. Spaces where animals are honoured as family, the land is nourished through thoughtful design, and everyday life becomes a practice of living in relationship.

In walking with the goats, we remember that belonging is built through the small moments repeated each day: tending, listening, laughing and growing together.

This is the rhythm of life we are cultivating at JAANYMILI.

And honestly, life is simply better with the giggles with goats.
