I come from a long line of people who gather.
My Grandmother Alice, raised seven children, and her home was always full — aunties, uncles, cousins, stories, laughter, beds made on the floor and food that somehow stretched to hold everyone. She was salt of the earth. Always enough. Always space. Always together.
My Mama (Nana Gail) carries the same medicine way.
At four, we moved to Bahrain with my second beautiful Dad Duncan, where I grew up on a compound of forty homes, the same families woven together for eight years. Our days were wild and free — riding bikes in packs, “hunting” for camels, running through farms, weaving between water moats and playing hide and seek through the date palms until the light softened. Connection was simply how we lived.
My father lived in Melbourne, where his kite and rollerblade shop was another classroom. From the age of eight, I was teaching people how to fly kites & rollerblade — learning early how to guide, encourage and meet people where they were. My grandparents, Opapa Robert Hart and Nana Zedra Velta Hart, introduced kites to Australia and New Zealand. Their story spans continents — from India & Latvia to England, then by boat to Tasmania land — where they travelled in a caravan, crafting and sharing kites as a way of calling people back outside, back into the wind, back into life.
From 12, I moved to boarding school in Melbourne, living alongside 150 peers for six formative years. It was here I began to understand my role more clearly. Women of all ages would find their way to me — for support through their bleeds, for a listening ear, for softness. I didn’t have language for it then, but I was already holding, already tending.
Since those early years, my path has been one of devotion to people, land and connection. I have worked as a teacher’s aide, nanny, bush school guide and community space holder, always drawn to the spaces where people gather, grow and remember.
My work now weaves together touch, land, creativity and community. I am a Zenthai Shiatsu therapist, native fibre weaving teacher, syntropic grower and facilitator of women’s spaces, family camps and bush-based learning. I am here for loving touch, aware parenting, shared caregiving and the rebuilding of village life.
Over the past 13 years, Ashleigh has been devoted to creating spaces where people can gather, learn, create, and reconnect through shared experience.
Beginning with regular community permablitz gatherings, she spent years organising weekly garden days — moving between homes and land projects with groups of people to establish food gardens, regenerative systems, and spaces of beauty and nourishment. Over time, this expanded into countless community land projects, workshops, and living learning environments, supporting well over a hundred gardens, natural building spaces, and communal creations.
Alongside this, Ashleigh has facilitated bush schools, women’s circles, camps, and family gatherings for more than a decade — weaving together land-based learning, creative expression, touch, movement, ritual, and relational practice. Her work brings together many threads: Zenthai Shiatsu, Compassionate Communication, syntropic gardening, native fibre weaving, clay work, natural building, storytelling, song, and connection to Country.
For many years, she has held regular women’s gatherings, which gradually evolved into larger immersion-style camps and Red Tent spaces held across the moon cycles. These spaces became places of deep connection, creativity, initiation, rest, and remembrance — grounded in community and the rhythms of nature.
Ashleigh also supports Gumbaynggirr Elder Aunty Alison in women’s initiation circles and ceremonial spaces, assisting in the holding and weaving of gatherings connected to culture, land, and community healing.
Natural building and collaborative creation have remained a strong thread throughout her life. Over the years she has facilitated bamboo workshops, mud building projects, children’s cubby creations, and communal structures across the communities she has lived within. In 2025, she guided an 80-person, two-day bamboo build at a festival — creating a large elevated public shelter through collective effort, creativity, and play. The structure remains standing as a living reminder of what people can create together.
In recent years, her focus has deepened into gathering culture itself — exploring how people come together in ways that nourish aliveness, connection, creativity, and belonging. Much of her work now centres around creating environments where people can remember their childlike nature, reconnect with the land and each other, and experience a more connected way of living together.
In 2025, I was initiated by Aunty Alison into her family and medicine ways.
My family totem is the kookaburra, and my personal totem is turmeric.
It is my responsibility to care for both, to listen, to learn, sing their songs, share their medicine and to carry their wisdom forward.
I am here because I have always been here —
gathering, holding, weaving people back into belonging.
And… if you listen closely, you might hear the laugh of the kookaburra echoing through it all.
